Gypsy Dance
Flamenco style - the music, dance, and clothing of the Romani community in Spain, is the inspiration for our Gypsy Dance collection. The Romani, commonly called Gypsies, are an Indo-Aryan nomadic people who - legend has it - walked out of India 1000 years ago and spread across the world. Many settled in Andalusia, in the south of Spain, where their culture developed and flourished in the spirited musical song and dance we know today as flamenco. The vibrant colors and dress of this tradition, imbued with the local heritage of Andalusia with its strong Islamic and European influences, animate the collection with lush floral and geometric designs. Silk twill, georgette, and crepe de chine are used in a line of dresses and tops in silhouettes and colors that work for day and evening.

Provence
More than two thousand years ago the Greeks came to the south of France and established a colony, and then the Romans followed, laying the foundation for what we now call Provence, a lush Mediterranean coastline and rugged interior valleys famous for their clear light and sunny climate - making it a longstanding favorite with artists and the rich and famous. The principle city of Marseilles has long been the most important trading port in the Mediterranean and, for centuries the importation of popular Indian textiles led local manufacturers to imitate and then evolve those styles leading to what we now know as the iconic French Country Style. Our Provence collection celebrates this style with a vintage-inspired range of silk and cotton dresses and tops evoking the elegant yet casual “Style Provencal.”

Hippie Girl
Our Hippie Girl collection harkens back to a time of hope and rebellion against a value system that prized materialism and superficial status symbols over internal contentment, and pays tribute to that spirit of freedom. A strong color palette with bold floral and paisley patterns that are tempered with vintage textures gives these silk and cotton pieces both a retro and contemporary style that is ideal for our own times in which we still struggle with many of the same aspirations as the original Hippies of the 1960’s and ’70’s.

Echoes of the Steppe
For generations we roamed the open grasslands that stretch between the Danube and the Far East, finding refuge along the streams and rivers of that vast wilderness. It was here that we wove our cloth and worked it with color and embroidery, gleaning inspiration from many tribes and people. Now we live in modern towns and cities, but we remember the old traditions…our handmade cloth and the freedom we found in that land, and we cherish our memories of the Steppe.

Mistral
The ancient French region of Provence is famous for its colorful textiles and costumes long famous with the many artists and designers who visit for the pleasant climate and clear light. India has played an important role in the shaping of this aesthetic through the printed cotton fabrics brought by sea to Marseilles, the capital city. So popular were these oriental designs that they were absorbed and copied over hundreds of years until they were transformed into what we now call the French Provincial Style. Our Mistral collection – named for the cold north wind that blows here in the spring - celebrates this style with a vintage-inspired range of silk and cotton dresses and tops ideal for casual days and elegant evenings..

Escape
When the global pandemic hit, and strict lockdowns kept us isolated at home, Cecile D'Ascoli began painting watercolor renderings of lotus seeds, stems, and flowers as a meditative study of inner discovery. It was from these artworks, with their naïve and primitive style, that Creative Director Peter D'Ascoli has created “Escape” – a collection of dresses and tops that speak with a fresh voice of sunny days and carefree nights.

Uzbek
Uzbek is a design that celebrates the tradition of ikat weaving in Central Asia, in a place now known as Uzbekistan. Ikat weaving is a process in which yarns are tie-died before weaving, resulting in a distinctive flame-stitch effect at the edges of the motifs. This local tradition evolved with large-scale designs in strong colors yielding a bold, graphic aesthetic. We use this inspiration to create our Uzbek design and, for these dresses and tops, we print it on Fine Khadi - our hand spun, hand woven Indian cotton.

Summer Classics
We created our Summer Classics collection of dresses and tops using three different qualities of Indian cotton that has been hand-spun and hand-woven in the countryside of West Bengal, India. Khadi Voile is so fine that it is semi-sheer so we double it with a lining in most models, and it feels soft and luxurious like the legendary Bengali muslin favored by Roman Patricians since ancient times. Piedmont Khadi is a mid-weight cotton woven with fine yarns yielding a clean, crisp feel. Fine Khadi is our classic summer cotton fabric and is most versatile; ideal for town or country.

Floral designs were all the craze at that time, and many were characterized by graphics with flat colors and outlines, part of the Hippie-psychedelic movement.
